About the Conference

Making Better Theater... One Play - and Playwright - at a Time

Seven Devils Playwrights Conference is dedicated to the development of American plays from the playwrights' perspective.

Playwrights selected for the Conference are invited to spend two weeks in McCall, Idaho writing, re-writing and rehearsing their plays with a talented company of directors, actors and dramaturgs. Each play is then presented as a fully staged reading at McCall's Alpine Playhouse.

"It answers a crying need for additional play development in areas of the country that have not been served by such things in the past. The connection with the community is unparalled in my experience."

-- Lee Blessing

In addition to playwrights selected via play submissions from across the country, four playwrights from the McCall/Donnelly High School playwriting class are chosen to take part in the Conference. Student playwrights are mentored by professional playwrights, and go through the same process of rehearsals, re-writes and staged readings.

Our Playwrights Intensive Program supports plays that would be better served by a week of table work, offering playwrights an intense dramaturgical focus and a sit-down reading.

Since 2003 the Seven Devils has offered a free playwriting workshop to interested writers at all levels. Past workshops have been hosted by: Robert Schenkkan, Eugene Lee, Sherry Kramer, Jeni Mahoney, John Olive, Caridad Svich and Eric Coble.

Each step in our process is designed to give the playwrights new and deeper insights into their work, and to give audience members and fellow artists a deeper understanding of the playwright's craft.

Throughout the Conference, student and community artists work hand-in-hand with their professional counterparts.
