2003 Conference

June 9 - 21, 2003 at the Alpine Playhouse in McCall Idaho (map)

The 2003 Plays

FALSE START (Peter Hanrahan) - Doctor Will's wife doesn't love him, but she's willing to try. Can a tropical vacation rescue their failing marriage? When Dr. Will's “reverse psychic” brother appears and claims there's been a murder, vacation plans are postponed and two marriages are thrown in jeopardy.

KINGDOM GONE (Robert Kerr) - When ex-convict Cyrus Bailey returns home after twelve years in prison, he must navigate an unfamiliar world of hormone-swollen cattle, carbonated dairy beverages, and a prodigy brother with a degenerative neurological disease. When Cyrus is offered the chance to change his past, he must decide whether to altering the course of his unhappy life, for better or worse, is worth giving up one night of certain happiness.

THE LONG ARMS OF JUPITER (Sherry Kramer) - While very much outside the box of traditional theater presentations, this text-based outdoor event is nonetheless a playwright's piece, and sure to expand the very idea of what it means to “write” a play.

YOU DON'T KNOW ME (Mary Portser) - Why do some women seem to have it all? Is it witchcraft? Good fortune? Pluck? Success, power and fair-play do battle with fear, greed and envy in this journey that takes us from a Puritan Colony in early America, to Snow White's battle with the Evil Queen, to a team of saleswomen in present day L.A.

FOUR BEERS (David Van Vleck) - Four fifty-something buddies gather for Monday-night football at a local bar only to find the TV broken. Determined to make the best of it, they fall into reflections on women, religion and retirement - until the arrival of the recently widowed Mel inadvertently exposes a betrayal within their ranks. Loyalties are tested, and trusts quietly shattered, in this comedy of faded dreams.

And from the McCall Donnelly High School Playwrights...

PERMENANT RECORD (Adam Ede) - If every event in your life became a part of your permanent record, what would your file look like at the end of the day? A roomful of newly dead recruits face the truth about themselves and each other in this dark comedy about what it means to have lived a “good” life. Perhaps the question isn't how many points does it take to get into Heaven, rather but how do you score points in the first place?

SEMPER FI (Josh Bowker) - Forrester and Craig, who lost their father in the Gulf War, struggle to gain the approval of their commanding and rigid grandfather. Craig, who has spent his life preparing for a life in the armed services, seems to have secured his place as the golden boy… until he starts to have second thoughts about joining up. Forrester sees his opening. He can earn his grandfather's respect. But at what price?

LEAVING (Erin Alyssa Freeburg) - Meagan leaves everything she knows behind when she marries her sweetheart Jacob, drops out of high school and starts her new life as army wife hundreds of miles of home. When Jacob is called up for duty, Meagan faces a life that she had never imagined. Young love meets real life in this thoughtful and cautionary tale of one girl's journey to adulthood, the hard way.

RIDE (Alison Wilson) - Except for the stitches where she tried to slit her wrists, Kaydee could be any girl in America . And this car ride, with mother and daughter arguing over everything from radio stations to boyfriends, could be just any car ride. But it's not. A mother and daughter struggle with each other, and within themselves, to make sense of their lives and their paths, as they make their way to Kaydee's new institutional home.
